Guo Rui is a dance artist living in Guangzhou, China. He studied dance in Beijing(BDC,Beijing Dance Academy), HongKong(APA,Academy for Performing Arts) and Brussels(PARTS,Performing Arts Research and Training Studios).

Through out his dance studies from Chinese folk dance, modern dance to contemporary dance, he has accumulated a diverse array of body knowledges through the different experiences. Instead of adhering to a singular idea of dance, he refuses to stop changing and instead, keep moving through his own research.

In China, Guo has been taught by the traditional dance practice that Art comes from Life. But the dance study in Brussels has given him another possibility, which include the idea of "Life imitating arts" like what Oscar Wilde said, and the imitation from art is not as same as the traditional method but as the philosophical term of Mimesis carries, "which include imitation, representation, mimicry, imitation, receptivity, non-sensuous similarity, the act of resembling, the act of expression, and the presentation of the self."

As an artist living in China, Guo is searching for the importance of dance in Chinese society and is trying to blur the separation between dance and everything else. He is interested in challenging ideas of dance in different forms and media.

Since he return to China in 2010, he has made many projects such as For Basic Needs(2010) with the local people of Chongqing, In-Between(2012) with the Guangdong Modern Dance Company, A Thing in-it-self(2013) in Chengdu, A Zone (2013) with the MFA students in Beijing Dance Academy,Utopia of Here and Now in the cross-over project in Beijing(2014),Dancing Stranger, a street performance in Chengdu and Guangzhou(2015),Untitled Solo Exhibition, Choreographer in Residence in Centre Intermondes (La Rochelle, France, 2015), Dance Expressions, when did we become contemporary? Collaboration with Alexandre Achour (Guangdong Modern Dance Company, 2016),Exhausted a project commissioned by Four Dimension Spatial(F.D.S Macao 2016), Borrowing our bodies Collaboration with Mikko Hyvonen(F.D.S Macao, 2017) and Words in Motion, a dance video experimentation in March 2017.

In 2016, Guo started to make performances in public space with Wu Hui in the urban village in Guangzhou. Since then, his interest in performing in public space is increasing accumulated. He initiated a project called Cracks in Macau Fringe Festival with Lou Hio Mei, Simo Kellokumpu, and Wu Hui in 2018. Later, he started to work with Wui Hui as a dual artist group entitled Guo Guo and Hui Hui.

Curatorial statement

Guo Rui is a freelance choreographer and researcher in curatorial practices, based in Guangzhou. His professional background is Chinese folk dance. He has carried out a series of curatorial practices next to his artistic creations. He is particularly interested in dances that produce critical insights as knowledge of inclusiveness through the medium of body.

Since 2017, he has been one of the curators in the "Dance Lab Project" of Macau. One of the focuses in his program is how to use dance or performing arts to bring relax, immediate and artistic communications, which is an attempt to foster a better mutual understanding of the local cultural and social context in Macau, the mainland of China and its relation with the international dance scene, as well as to rethink the dominant contemporary dance exchange modes standardized in the West over the past several decades and to experience together potentials of a new mode of collaborative work in the global context of dance world.
