Utopia in Here and Now 理想国 (2014)

Who Are You?
Collabaration with WANG HAO
When I stood in the downtown of Las Vegas, I felt lost. Different styles of buildings were filled in the city from east to west, from ancient to modern times, from the past to the future. The culture, identity and characteristics of their differences were blurred. The landmark buildings from other countries in Las Vegas have pulled out of its own cultural background and lost its significance. There is a clear disconnection between the building and its importance as an landmark. This has made me to think about the disconnection that surrounds us. To a large extent, most of what passes for communication and the objects we collect and consume are all copies of something we will never experience as an original, like the cultural background of the landmarks in Las Vegas. The disconnection between what we know as the image and what we experience established a large part of the world we know.
Who Are You is going to reflect the reality of the disconnection submerged us in materially and immediately. Who Are You is not just a question waiting for you to answer but an invitation that allows you to mix and fuse what the world you see and rebuild a new possibilities to experience the images around us, particularly in the city like Las Vegas.

A型地带

A Zone
Our society still suppresses difference and alienates people from what they can do.
In the pursuit of creativity, we must realize that the control of freedom is multifarious, such as a normalizing standard of judgment, a hierarchical system of a social relationship, or the homogeny of identities. The Control exists unconsciously and mechanically in reality. Can we break through the various forms of control to create a real region for individual creativity?
A Zone inspired by anarchist writer Hakim Bey’s theory, Temporary Autonomous Zone, in which he suggests the best way to elude the formal structures of control is to concentrate on the present and on releasing one’s own mind from the controlling mechanisms that have been imposed on it.
If an orderly extension of common sense is fixed and determinate, we must make a rupture of the established categories. The present is a flux of change and difference, we are willing to become all that we can become—though we cannot know what that is in advance. It is in this chance that an individual can be free and the creativity can be real empowerment.
A Zone is trying to create an ensemble of different forms of sensation and feelings. The control of one’s own mind is challenged and become the source of the creation. We creates a state of chaos by breaking the mechanism of one’s own mind, blurring the boundary between consciousness and unconsciousness, meaning of expression is constantly constructed and dissolved, it never stops on one thing; movement as different energies initiates inside the body, it travels in different body parts, converts into different gestures, projects into space and connects to the other; vocal sounds are presented as acoustic signals which be playfully explored as a different formation of making sense.
All the elements are mixed into one intense body of performance which is chaotic, variable, and unrecognizable. A new territory for creativity emerges from the challenge of controls in the very A Zone.

Feel It Warm
People increasingly find themselves in the elevators running through the skyscrapers of China, which also increase rapidly nowadays. An elevator is an enclosed public space where individuals come into temporary intimate relationships with the other, but there seems to be an invisible and embarrassing block of communication that exits in these situations. Can we break the block through the establishment of different relations between people?
Feel It Warm is a series of performances that happen in elevators. It challenges the closeness of the space, invades the independence of individuals, exchanges energy between different moods, and helps to reveal the personality of each person.
Elevator becomes an unfamiliar space for people to be in. Instead of waiting for arrival, you have unexpected experiences as you encounter the uncertainty of the performances.

Dance Poem
Dance Poem
There is a clear distinction between set movement and improvisation. In Dance Poem, I tried to blur the difference between them and make a new discovery of freeing dance .
I started with improvisation, and wrote down what I have danced and perceived during my dancing little by little. By doing so, I got the set materials. I treated the materials as a map or guidance information. Instead of repeating what I have done or set before, I tried to follow the guide and discover something new each time in the same materials/dance somehow.
I changed different environments to dance, invited people come to see me dancing, and shifted the duration of the dance...The dance is like a natural scene inviting me to discover its beauty.
The dance can be a relax journey or an exciting adventure.

Falling Down / 坠 落 (2012)
The piece entitled Falling Down is a new creation made by Guo Rui in January 2012. This time, he turned back to his dancing background, Chinese folk dance, and work on the different types of being/performing through Chinese folk dance to contemporary dance.
The performer encounters different forces in the piece which make things falling down or push something new to happen. The performer reacts in it in different ways from theatrical acting to physical movement. The question behind all the actions is what makes body to dance/move. Is it a reason or a feeling?

引自曼•雷("An original is a creation motivated by desire. Any reproduction of an originals motivated by necessity. It is marvelous that we are the only species that creates gratuitous forms". Quotation by Man Ray)
